Succession often gets left until an owner is ready to step away. By then, many of the decisions that would have made the transition smoother, and the business more valuable, are much harder to make.
Why start early
A buyer, family member or key employee taking over will look closely at how the business runs without you. If every customer relationship, decision and process sits in your head, the business is worth less and the handover is riskier. Fixing that takes time.
Questions worth answering now
- Do you want to sell, hand over to family or staff, or wind down?
- Roughly when would you like to step back?
- What would the business need to look like for that to happen?
- Who else understands how the business really works?
Make the business less dependent on you
The most valuable succession work is usually practical:
- Document how things are done. Write down key processes, even roughly.
- Share relationships. Introduce staff to key customers and suppliers.
- Delegate decisions. Let others make calls you would normally make, and coach them through it.
- Tidy the financials. Clean, consistent records make any future sale or transfer far easier.
A business that runs well without its owner is easier to sell, easier to hand over and easier to enjoy.
Bring in advice at the right time
Succession touches tax, legal structure, family and finances. Getting accounting and legal advice early means you can consider the options while there is still time to act on them.
The best time to start
Even if stepping away feels a long way off, the work of making your business less dependent on you also makes it easier to run today. That alone makes it worth starting now.
